The Mediating Role of Migrant Community-Based Organizations: Challenges and Coping Strategies

Resumen: Migrant community-based organizations (MCBOs) are key mediating structures between immigrants and host societies. However, when implementing this role in host societies, MCBOs often face a number of challenges that reduce their chances to be effective in promoting social justice. This paper aims to analyze the challenges that MCBOs settled in Milan (Northern Italy) experience and the coping strategies that they use in order to provide some guidelines on how to support them. Indepth interviews, observations and document analysis with 15 MCBOs were conducted. Based on a situational analysis, we present the main challenges perceived by MCBOs at three levels: internal (i.e., surviving), inter-organizational (i.e., collaborating) and community (i.e., being recognized as mediating actors). We provide specific guidelines for action on how to address such challenges and thus foster the role of MCBOs as mediating structures in receiving societies.

Las organizaciones comunitarias de población inmigrante (MCBOs) son estructuras mediadoras clave entre la población inmigrante y las sociedades de acogida. Sin embargo, al desempeñar este papel en las sociedades de acogida, las organizaciones comunitarias de población inmigrante suelen enfrentarse a una serie de desafíos que reducen sus posibilidades de ser eficaces en la promoción de la justicia social. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar los desafíos que afrontan las organizaciones comunitarias de base establecidas en Milán (norte de Italia) y las estrategias que utilizan para hacerles frente, con el fin de proporcionar algunas directrices sobre cómo apoyarlas. Se realizaron entrevistas en profundidad, observaciones y análisis documental con 15 organizaciones de base comunitaria. Basándonos en un análisis situacional, presentamos los principales desafíos percibidos por las MCBOs en tres niveles: interno (i.e., sobrevivir), interorganizativo (i.e., colaborar) y comunitario (i.e., ser reconocidas como agentes mediadores). Proporcionamos directrices de actuación específicas sobre cómo abordar dichos desafíos y fomentar así el papel de las MCBOs como estructuras mediadoras en las sociedades receptoras.
